History of Patuakhali District

Patuakhali was under the ancient Chandradip reign and Kachua under Bauphal upazila was the capital of this kingdom. Due to natural calamities and frequent attacks of Portuguese and Mugs; the capital later was shifted to Madhobpasha of Barisal. King Todormal, Minister of Emperor Akber sent kanoongo Jimmak Khan to survey the area. At that time, the forest area of Chandradip was separated from Chandradip and marked as Bazuhadba as protected area. Later this reign was formed by three Parganas, which were Salimabad, Bajuk Umedpur and Uranpur.At the end of the 18th century due to atrocity of Burmese King, the Buddhist Rakhaines of Arakan fled and started to live in Galachipa upazila, Khepupara, Kuakata of Kolapara upazila and different islands of Rangabali upazila. After this, inhabitation started to increase in this area.

During the liberation war, Patuakhali town was first attacked by Pakistani military on 26 April 1971. On that day they brutally killed more than 100 people by attacking in Matbar Bari, Puran Bazar, DC Bungalow area and many other places of the town. During the war, many other short duration frontal battles took place in Sadar, Golachipa, Kolapara and other areas of Patuakhali District. In these battles, many heroic sons of Patuakhali district sacrificed their lives. After a long struggle and blood-shed, Patuakhali District became free from the Pakistani military on 8th December, 1971.
